Workshop “Mail for you!”
A workshop on the history of Soviet prisoners of war
In the permanent exhibition, the pupils discover that 60 % of Soviet prisoners of war died in German captivity. Among Western Allied prisoners of war, the death rate was 3.6%. The murder or deliberate neglect of Soviet prisoners of war leading to death is one of the greatest German war crimes.
In the workshop, the students work individually and in groups to read selected letters written by former Soviet prisoners of war. When comparing the letters with the provisions of the Geneva Convention on the treatment of prisoners of war, they come across obvious contradictions. This makes the criminal character of the National Socialist war of extermination in the East clearly visible to them.
The biographical approach of the workshop opens up an individual and emotional access to the topic for the young people.
