Exhibition opening: Frohes Neues Jahr С Новым Годом З Новим Роком Happy New Year

an exhibition
by Jelena Jeremejewa,

curated by Elena Malzew

Friday, 15 November 2024, 7 pm at Museum Berlin-Karlshorst

In an audiovisual art installation, artist and documentary film director Jelena Jeremejewa brings together New Year’s speeches by heads of government from the Soviet Union, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Germany and the USA.

In the speeches, which date from 1982 to the present day, Jelena Jeremejewa addresses the transformation of political verbalisations of reality. She shows how communities and spaces are dissolved and redesigned through words of power.

The ritual of the New Year’s address not only reflects what can be said and heard at the time, it also constantly creates the image of a phantom community – a ‘we’ that sometimes has to be addressed, cared for and controlled as a nation, sometimes as a people.

Prior to the opening, an overview tour of the museum in German language will take place at 5 pm.
