
Women in the passing on of history
in the event series ‘Writing History – writing stories: The Second World War in Literature and Science’
in cooperation with the ZOiS Centre for East European and International Studies

How are memories passed on within families and societies? What role do female voices play in making historical events accessible to future generations? In Irene Langemann’s Das Gedächtnis der Töchter, the narrator learns her family history from her mother, which goes back to the time of the Tsars. Following on from the novel, we discuss with the author the special significance of women in the culture of remembrance.

- Irene Langemann, Filmmaker and writer whose biographical experiences as a cross-border traveller between Russia and Germany shape her creative work. She is the author of the novel Das Gedächtnis der Töchter.
